George Orwell's '1984'

on a thread it was asked how we chose our screen name.

mine is from the book george orwell's, 1984. .

'winston smith' is the protagonist who big brother tries to crush.. the book, along with george orwell's animal farm, are required reading imo for any jw/x-jw.. actually, the book is a great insight into what can happen when individuals surrender their freedom to any high control group.. .

Odrade, I ahve to add Dune to my must read book list.

Looking back, I have a REALLY good JW friend who has read this book and enjoyed it greatly. I wonder if he has allowed himself to equate Dune as you have with the WTS somewhere in his mind?

When I made the two topics, I knew which one would get more replys.

But I do hope that a lurker would see this thread and then be moved to read the book based on my or other's comments.

Hopefully a more powerful end result if just one JW takes a step out of the high-control group of JW's after reading the book.

And I like that others have recommended similar books. Who knows what seeds will sprout in a repressed mind?

Probably as many possibly dystopias to write about as they are utopias to wish for.

i was brought up in the "truth" for over 30 years, mum was too, dad in it since a teenager, they were pioneers, i pioneered, ive left, managed not to be disfellowshipped, i dont believe it, but i love my parents, theyre nice people, victims too, how do i not take it out on them, i have a drink in my hand its how im starting to cope, its hard to deal with right?

am i normal or am i crazy?

i couldnt buy a xmas tree, the guilt, i look over my shoulder every time i buy a birthday card, if i meet an elder i feel frightened and guilty - but i dont believe it!

It's a new thought for most people to try to find what their AUTHENTIC INNER SELF really is.

It is easier to attach your ideals to a group mentality than to find and then carry through with what you really truly believe in.

Some find comfort leaving the JW's and then becoming a member of another group that is closer to what they perceive God to be.

To me, I didn't want to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire, namely trade one counterfeit religion for another one.

So I feel it is important to search out points of view that you would have never considered before as a JW.

Plus it is enlightening to be able to look into other belief's free of judgment as a JW.

did you struggle with confidence or is that just me?

I do. It's humiliating to admit that you were 'duped' into a cult a good part of your life. It's a tough pill to swallow admitting that all the while I was condemning others door to door I was really in a cult.

But such an experience isn't a total loss. Realizing that all of my hard work as a JW was for a lost cause is teaching myself humility and understanding of others.

Compassion and empathy are things some never learn in life. Enduring such an experience has given me a lesson that I may have never have learned otherwise, therefore enriching my total life experience.

I am finding that confidence should come from interdependence with humanity and not from independence to just stand on my own.

You'll find understanding here that will be beneficial to your recovery from the JW cult.

I just DA'd myself last December, so I am recovering myself, but I find it helpful to be here during this stage in my life.

When I heard the news this morning, I thought about it for a while and all I could conclude is, what a GD mess! Both sides have been duking it out so long that I have a hard time applauding either side?s little victories.

RE: the idea of ?colonization?, I wonder how keen I would be if some nation would come to the USA and start forcing citizens here to let Native Americans reclaim control of land they once had before ?colonization? by Europeans.

I?m fresh outta dub-dumb, so maybe that comment is naïve and I?m sure that is not fully analogous to what is going on in Israel. But I do try to put myself in another?s shoes and can see how both sides would be upset at the way things currently are in Israel.

I don?t have much of a vested interest in any of this right now in my life so won?t get into a political argument w/anyone. It is interesting to hear the different sides to the argument though.

My uncle passed away..

it was only a matter of time before my uncle nathan passed away.

i wished i had gone and seen him before he died, but i didn't because we had a dustup about a month ago.

he was a sad tale..he had the talent beaten out of him by his abusive alchoholic elder for a father...he played classical cello for a while...except all that talent was robbed from him...so he ran...ran away and joined the navy...left the navy and led a hard life...jail, homelessness, near death motorcycle accidents, etc...he ended up in the va hospital about a year ago...he had fallen into a deep depression after succumbing to the inherited condition anti trypsin(sp?

if you're like me, you used to dread certain days of the week.

mainly, tuesdays and thursdays for me.

waste the entire day at school, then come home, take a shower, scarf down supper and be ready to go by 6:30pm.

how long did it take for you to like former meeting nights?

I liked them the minute I stopped attending them, including Sat Service and the Sunday meeting

It's especially sweet sitting home on Sunday and drinking coffee and reading.

One Saturday morning I was driving to an appointment on a winding, scenic road after a snowstorm.

The snow was sticking to all of the trees and had blanketed the ground with a wonderfully brilliant, pristine white snow.

The sun was breaking through the clouds and trees with beams of yellow light.

I looked at the clock and it read "10:20", & I knew some poor, JW sap was just counting down the minutes before he could ask the group to go on break.

A huge grin broke across my face to match the warm feeling in my heart knowing that I was free and enjoying the day as I saw fit! .

I am in the process of joining up to practice Aikido every Tues & Thu. It just happens that the days and times are the same as my wife's meeting nights.

e-watchman has sent over 5000 letters to congregations in the u.s informing them of the ngo debacle and a similar one to 101 branches around the world.

and according to his guestbook post he has signed his real name to the letters!

A well written letter indeed.

I hope that he is seeing this through as he states he is. It is a considereable undertaking just with time and energy alone.

I wonder if he could have a "Kinko's" or similar print shop put this together for him 'mail ready' & with a bulk postage rate to save time and money?
